Last June, I sat down with Gary Jobson to learn about his memories of Running Tide. Even though he lives less than a mile from her berth in Annapolis, he’s only sailed on the boat once. But in her heyday, he called tactics for her archrival (Ted Turner’s Tenacious).

No surprise, his home office shelves are crowded with decades of sailing books; his own, of course, but also pretty much everything else that’s been written about our sport. And it occurred to me that—though we can all hear his voice in our heads—few people really understand how much he has done over the years to support and encourage sailors of all abilities.
So I asked him if he’d be interested in becoming my next Seahorse victim, and he said yes. About a month later, he managed to find a spare hour to chat with me—between charity gigs. The result is out in the November issue of Seahorse Magazine, and as usual they dug up some great photos.
This is my 28th profile for Seahorse, and they’ve graciously allowed me to share the PDF with you. So, without further ado, here’s The Voice of Sailing—mostly in his own words.
