Ask anyone lucky enough to live on the New England coast full time for their favorite month of the year, and most will say September. Why? Because the temperature is (usually) perfect: warm days, cool nights. Outside adventures can still stretch into evening—and the summer crowds have gone back home.

For me, the cherry (tomato) on top of all that is the added creativity that comes with cooler weather and fewer distractions. Though intuitively winter would seem best for the hunkering-down of writing, fall is always my most productive season. I need both cool mornings working on the porch and afternoons on the water to spark my best ideas.
September has rushed by this year, and the days are noticeably shorter than even a week ago. I’m savoring my swims, counting down the sailing days left in 2026, and taking time to appreciate the gorgeously lingering sunsets. If June is the month of pure potential, September is the time to store up all those high summer memories and savor the sun’s warmth. And, for this writer at least, it’s also the best time to follow my curiosity down the deepest rabbit holes—wherever that might lead.
How about you: did September race by too fast? Share your seasonal musings in the comments below, because I read every single one with gratitude. Thanks for being here, and see you next Thursday.
