Raising a Timely Toast to Uncertainty

Happy 2026!

I always start off January excited to dive into the year’s big project: something that takes more time to complete than even the most in-depth magazine feature.

For the last three years, that project was researching, writing, and producing The Heart of Hound. Now that my sixth and biggest book is out in the world, I’m starting to ask and receive an inevitable question: what’s next?

And for the first time in about three decades, I actually have no answer.

I’ve already started researching another historically significant boat, which has been fun . . . but so far at least, I haven’t dug up any forgotten stories (like the many that made Hound so worthy of a coffee table book). On the fiction side, there’s that sequel to Ferry to Cooperation Island many of you have been asking about, which seems far too close to any normal definition of done to simply abandon. But will and good intentions do not finish books; passion does. And so far at least, my previous passion for that imaginary island has not re-invaded my daydreams.

I’ve never published on New Year’s Day before, and I’m not big on resolutions. But today I’m going to remind myself (and you) what really matters to me—and promise to apply the following personal truths to both work and play.

1. Be curious, not judgmental

I borrowed this from Ted Lasso, who attributes it to Walt Whitman. (If you need a reminder that nice guys do win, even when they’re underestimated, here’s the darts scene.)

2. Take the time and trust my gut

Following my curiosity down the deepest, darkest rabbit holes is what (eventually) leads to my best stories.

3. Get on the water as much as possible

Sailing or paddling or foiling, it’s where I do my best woolgathering

4. Bring joy

Whether it’s creating stories or just exchanging a smile with my neighbors on a frigid winter day, I will try to help balance out some of the hate and anxiety in our world; not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year.

5. Keep blogging

It’s a weekly luxury, to explore what I’m thinking about and how I feel—while supported by all of you. Some of you have just arrived, while others have been around since 2009. Either way, thank you for allowing me into your inbox each Thursday, and for helping me to discover what’s next!

PS Not everything about 2026 is uncertain. Next week’s post will cover the highlights of a December trip to Chile (which included sailing, hiking, and the kindness of strangers). And the photo teaser below was taken by my next Seahorse “victim.”
