Hearty Praise for The Heart of Hound

As soon as The Heart of Hound made its way out into the world, I began to receive compliments from people I interviewed. Obviously it’s been a ton of fun to hear that “you got it right,” but it’s also made me realize something rather obvious in hindsight: no one person lived through the boat’s entire history. Which means that this book is helping to provide a deeper perspective—even for the lucky folks who played a part in her many adventures.

At the risk of sounding braggy, below are some of the most inspiring comments I’ve received.

Delivering a copy to Captain Owen Johnson

Art Santry III, son of first owner (1970–1984)

The best book about a boat I’ve ever seen.”

Forrest Shropshire, captain (1984–1994)

You did a wonderful job and really captured the history of Hound.”

Peter Dinkel, watch captain (1990s)

What a gorgeous book you created. Everything about it is first rate starting with the incredible cover jacket . . . I could go on and on but it is one of the of the most beautiful and well thought out books I have ever seen and I am a book lover. Then we get to what was written and what a great story you told, beginning with the Santry legacy and the design and creation of Hound. Then the loving story of Frank and Delphine’s ownership . . . the generosity of spirit that both Frank and Delphine gave to all who sailed on Hound. How lucky was Hound to have another owner who has the story continuing with new adventures and taking her competitiveness to another level. Thanks again for such a great book.”

Chris Huntington, crewmember (2020s)

Heart is a masterpiece! So stunning in every respect. Amazing photos . . .  so wonderful to have all of that detail preserved so clearly. You did a superb job!”

Last but not least, I was thrilled to receive this from maritime historian Maynard Bray: “You did a superb job of writing, organizing, and digging up the illustrations—so my sincere congratulations on “The Heart of Hound!” I’m proud to have been a small part of its creation.”

Have you read The Heart of Hound? If so, feel free to add your thoughts below. If not, here’s how to add a copy to your library. Either way, thanks for letting me brag just a little . . . and see you next Thursday.
